To Those Considering Joining Hayamizu Laboratory

For Students Considering Joining Our Lab for Graduate Studies

Educational Philosophy of Hayamizu Laboratory

In our lab, which focuses on the bio-nano interface, you will eventually engage in a wide range of disciplines, including physics, chemistry, and biology. Some of you may worry that acquiring such a broad spectrum of knowledge is daunting, but there is no need for concern. Dr. Hayamizu, the lab director, earned his degree in the field of solid-state physics, and he approaches understanding various research areas through the lens of physics. This means that through your time in Hayamizu Laboratory, you will learn to comprehend diverse scientific disciplines from a physics-based perspective, acquiring methods that will enable you to generate new insights and contribute to innovative research.

How to proceed your research in the lab

In order to acquire skills in unfamiliar research fields, it is essential for students to take the initiative in thinking through and advancing their research. After joining the lab, students will have the opportunity to discuss potential research themes with their supervisor and make decisions on their own regarding their specific research direction. Each student undertakes an individual research theme while collaborating with others as needed. As students progress through their academic years, they develop specialized skills and expertise aligned with their chosen theme. In this way, each student works in the lab as if collaborating with other specialists in their respective fields. Individual meetings with the supervisor are scheduled proactively by the students based on their research progress. These meetings typically take place once every one to four weeks, depending on the student’s progress. In addition to these meetings, we also hold group activities such as research seminars, journal clubs, and paper presentations. These group meetings are held weekly, with assigned students taking turns to present.

Lab Tours for Both Institute of Science Tokyo Students and External Applicants

We highly recommend that both students from Institute of Science Tokyo and those from other universities visit our lab. Since you will be dedicating valuable time to your graduate studies, it is essential to choose an environment where you feel motivated and challenged. To ensure this, we encourage you to see for yourself the environment you may soon be part of. Meeting with the supervisor in person is important, as is getting a feel for the lab atmosphere and the dynamic among the members. If you are interested in our research and are considering joining Hayamizu Laboratory, please don’t hesitate to send an email to Dr. Hayamizu.
